Chapter 170 – The Night Before the Rice Price Crash
In the autumn of 1930, forecasts in September pointed to an abundant harvest the likes of which had rarely been seen in recent years.
And it wasn’t just the Japanese archipelago, similar predictions of a bumper crop were coming from the Korean Peninsula as well.
A good harvest is usually a good thing. The rice supply increases, and prices drop a little.
The lower price hurts farmers, but ordinary people, especially those living in cities, can afford to eat more rice at a cheaper cost.
But this year was different. Starting around August, reports from all over suggested not merely a good harvest, but one so bountiful it might come only once in several decades, perhaps even once in a century.
