【Sam’s POV】
“Simone has been killed!”
What the fuck? Simone has been killed?
“What do you mean?”
How can she be killed?
“Just come with me!”
She grabbed my arm and dashed towards the northern wing of the castle, where Simone’s room was supposed to be. I didn’t even get the chance to grab my weapons, just in case the enemy was still there.
We soon reached her room. The door was wide open, and an eerie silence enveloped the room. I entered it after Cornellia to find that everyone else was already present there.
Shiggurath was with Chloe, comforting her, while Jack and Reishu stood beside the bed.
My gaze then went towards the bed, and there it was, the corpse of Simone.
She really was killed………..
I walked closer to it.
The first thing I noticed was how her eyes were still wide open, as if shocked over her own death. And on her face was an expression of disbelief. A hole had been opened in her chest, probably by a sharp blade, and the entire bed was dyed red with her blood.
By the way, the blade was not here.
Reishu was standing beside the bed in a daze. His eyes were bloodshot and he was clenching his fists so hard that they were bleeding.
“Reishu.”
I gently called to him, and he finally looked my way with a face of a man who had just lost everything.
“I am really sorry for your loss, but do you have any idea on who could have done it?”
That’s the most important question right now. It’s possible that the murderer is still roaming in this castle.
And well, the death of Simone is kind of……….. sad. It would be quite boorish of me to not avenge her.
“……No.”
He replied after much effort.
I guess asking such a question right now comes under being tactless. Anyway.
“Can I examine her?”
“Don’t you dare touch her!”
He immediately snapped and released all his bloodlust. Shiggurath reflexively got ready to fight, but I stopped her with a wave of my hand.
“I understand. How about we leave you alone for some time so that you can calm down?”
If he can calm down, that is.
“…………That would be much appreciated.”
He spoke with a choking voice.
“Understood. Let’s go everyone.”
I ushered everyone out of the room. We went back to my room to let Reishu cry alone for a while. He has lost his daughter, one that adored him very much. I can understand how he feels right now. It’s best to leave him alone for now. He’ll handle himself.
The question right now is, who is the killer?
It’s kind of weird how my isekai adventure had turned into a murder mystery. Something is definitely wrong with this system.
After reaching my room, all of them sat down on the sofa or the bed, and seemed exhausted. Cornellia expression told that she was seething with rage, while Chloe still seemed listless.
“Now then, please give me the details about how and when it was discovered.”
Cornellia turned towards me and started ranting.
“I myself am not sure about that! I was sleeping when someone banged on my door causing me to wake up. The Demon King had entered this castle easily before, so I was on my guard as I opened the door. But there was no one there. I poked my head out and saw a shadow running on the corridor and going towards the northern wing. I hurriedly woke up Shiggurath and Chloe to follow it. When we reached the northern wing, Simone’s room’s gate was open. I walked inside, afraid that the shadow might have gone inside. That’s when I saw her lying one her bed, dead.”
Hmm….
“I was pretty surprised when Cornellia came into my room asking me to follow her, but I didn’t think that Simone would be killed.”
Shiggurath added.
I wanted to hear Chloe’s side of things, but she still looked pretty shaken up. I guess the death of someone who was close to her until yesterday hit her pretty hard. It would be wiser to let her calm down and then interrogate her.
“What happened then?”
“I was pretty shocked by what had happened. Cornellia was standing there in a daze, while Chloe had already fallen on her knees. The moment I turned around to go out and inform you people, Reishu and Jack were already standing there.”
Jack? What was Jack doing there?
Jack, as if having sensed the question on my mind, spoke up.
“I heard the commotion outside and got out, only to see these three girls running out of the corridor. I decided to follow them, but when I took the left from the junction, I bumped into Reishu. According to him, he had sensed those three girls running out of their room, and had come out to check if anything was wrong. Then we both came running after them and entered the room, only to see Simone’s corpse lying there. Reishu was pretty shocked, and he hadn’t moved from the bedside or said a word until you arrived.”
Reishu sensed those three moving about in the castle, but he could not sense the perpetrator? He could not sense his daughter being killed?
“Anything else? Did you notice anything out of place?”
“Well, I could smell demonic mana from her wound on the chest.”
“Demonic mana?”
A demon killed Simone? Does that mean Regina sent someone to kill her? Or did she personally do it?
More importantly, just why would she kill Simone? It’s rude to speak like this of the dead, but killing Simone had no practical value. She was as inconsequential as a pebble in this war.
Or did they do it rile up Reishu? Maybe they knew that Simone was Reishu’s beloved daughter and that killing her would be easy, so they did it to make Reishu lose himself to his emotions? Killing someone who is blind with rage is far easier than killing a level-headed person.
But, do they really fear Reishu that much? Reishu is strong, yes. But he’s not strong enough to turn the tide of the war by himself. I’m sure there are those capable of handling him in her army.
Then there’s that matter with the shadow. The way it was executed is as if the perpetrator was deliberately leading us to Simone’s corpse, even though there wasn’t any need to do so. The risk he, assuming the shadow is a male, took just doesn’t match up with the benefits. Unless he didn’t want us to discover the body in the morning.
Many things here don’t make any sense. Damn, and this had to happen while the war is already upon us. Shit!
Just then, someone knocked on the door.
