Return of the Fallen Volume 11 Chapter 19
“Someone actually managed to become a God with this scarce amount of divine energy but it ended in disaster. What happened?”
Kazuki was curious. The difference between a God and a Demigod was just far too different.
(How could it have gone wrong? Even if that God couldn’t use all of its power, just a fraction should have surely allowed them to escape or at the very least survive but the way Marty put it, that doesn’t seem to be the case.)
“It was tragic. A Demigod, after several thousands of years, had finally managed to become a God but this higher stage was his and everyone on Oasis 5’s doom. As I said before, the stronger you are, the more you are pulled down by this decaying world. Since you are at the 5th stage, you probably can’t even jump more than an inch or two from the ground. As a Demigod, I could probably leap 10 feet in the air at the max. The only reason is our strength is way too different but the pull on me is millions of times more. This place is far too strange and I can’t even begin to tell ya why this place pulls ya down but if for me it’s millions of times greater than you. Imagine the pull of a God. It must be like an infinite anchor dragging one down. As you know, we use our divine energy to keep this place afloat. For us Demigods, it’s already hard enough to gather what little energy we can and still have anything to spare. Even if a God can absorb more divine energy than a Demigod it will be nowhere near enough to keep a tower in the sky.”
“So you’re saying this God brought the entire tower down?”
Marty sat down next to Kazuki and sighed.
*Haa*
“The man was beyond selfish. He knew that they couldn’t stay in the sky with his added weight but he refused to leave. Because of this, the entirety of Oasis Five crashed into the desert, killing everyone aboard.”
Kazuki was confused.
“Wait, I don’t get what happened exactly. If they knew they were going to crash why not just leave or rather even if they crashed they were Demigod’s a simple crash shouldn’t have just killed them so how did they die?”
“Seeing that they were going down, my theory is that this particular God was in denial and forced the others to stay. What can they do against a God? As for the crash killing them, everyone here finds it odd too. How could a simple crash claim all of their lives? Falling from a few hundred feet in the air, even if we weigh millions of times more, is nothing to us. Well, not for you but the rest of us should suffer not even a single scratch, yet none of them made it. Not one of us or the other Oasis could figure out how or why. Because of this, this has left a deep routed fear in all of us. We must keep the Oasis floating no matter what. It’s another reason why everyone was so harsh on you earlier. They see ya as nothing more than a burden.”
Kazuki raised a brow and Marty realized she may have insulted Kazuki.
“Uh, I’m not calling ya a burden. I’m just saying what the others are probably feeling. Damn, that still sounds bad, heh oh well.”
Kazuki didn’t know what to say to that and just went back to the oases.
“The crash killed the Demigods as well as that God. I understand now, I guess. Seeing a stranger such as myself come in and have no way to contribute, I may have treated that person with hostilities as well.”
Marty chuckled.
“I don’t think you are so simple. I saw you escape that sandworm using your blood and you even can use those talisman things to manipulate regular weak magical energy. I think I’ll be able to get plenty of use out of ya. Oh, that reminds me, I came up here to get ya, come on.”
Marty didn’t wait for Kazuki to say anything and she just grabbed him by the hand and dragged him out of his room and down several flights of steps. While walking down the tower several people peeked out of their rooms and ooos and awwwws rang out at the sight of Marty holding Kauzki’s hand.
Marty didn’t care and kept pulling Kazuki around until they finally reached a different room.
“Come on in and make yourself at home.”
Several lights flicked on and continued on for several thousand feet. This room was huge and was more akin to a warehouse than a bedroom. Inside this place, there were various pieces of equipment or junk. Tools, crystals for some unidentifiable purpose, and so on. This whole room was filled with things and gadgets. Kazuki was awed by this as he could recognize not a single item. This awe only lasted for a split second before he turned to Marty.
“All of this stuff. How can it be here? Aren’t you all worried about the weight?”
Marty nodded.
“Another mystery hehehe. All of these things, all of this precious research material. I have weighed every single part and piece and combined it is several thousand tons of weight but once more there is some strangeness. The tower and this world, somehow do not recognize these things as having any weight.”
Kazuki was blown away.
Marty walked over to a piece of junk. It looked like a thick cube of metal but Kazuki couldn’t say for sure. Picking it up she tossed it over to Kazuki and sure enough, this single piece weighed at least a thousand pounds.
“See, its weight is real. For some reason, the tower is completely unaffected by its weight and instead only living beings can sink this tower.”
“Why?”
Marty shrugged.
“Wish I knew. Theoretically, we should be able to take these scrapes and cover one’s body by making a suit of this stuff. In that way you’d think the suit wearer would only feel the weight of the material but no. Even if you are completely covered it’s like this world knows.”
“Stez said this place was the decaying eye of an ancient powerful being but you keep calling it a world. Why is that?”
“Heh, I wonder myself. Maybe it’s to comfort me. After all, to call one’s home a decaying eye instead of a world just feels nasty rolling off the tongue does it not?”
“Fair point I suppose.”
Kazuki twirled the cube in his hand before tossing it back.
“This isn’t what you wanted to show me is it.”
Marty set the cube down before curling her finger.
Walking deeper into this warehouse, the two stopped in front of something covered in a dark-tanned cloth similar to a tarp. With a pull, the cloth was tossed aside revealing two large half circles. These half circles looked like an arch that had the middle top part missing. It was as if someone had broken it rather than simply removed it as there were signs of damage and dents upon it. The two half-circles were widest at the bottom, around two feet, and thinned out further up until both half-circles came to a point.
These two half circles stood atop a platform and would not fall over. Kazuki curiously walked up to one side and ran his hand across several symbols that were raised up.
(This material feels like wood but I can tell with a glance that it’s almost as tough as my Cosmic metal. These symbols…they aren’t the ancient language of magic but something else I’ve never seen before. What could they mean?)
“Marty, what is this?”
“That my old friend is the key to escaping this place…I think.”
Kazuki was curious.
“Let me show you.”
Marty ran over to the side and began throwing things left and right up and down as she searched for something. She wasn’t cautious and nearly hit Kazuki half a dozen times. Eventually, though she stopped.
“Ah Ha!”
She held something that looked like an armband except this one was much thicker than normal. She ran over to a nearby desk and grab at a few tools lying in wait before she quickly took the thing apart and retrieved a small spherical crystal. This one looked nearly identical to the core keeping the tower afloat except this one was much smaller. She then ran back and pressed in a tiny panel on the side of one of the half circles and this panel opened. Marty then shoved the core inside before she grabbed at one of the symbols sticking up from the half circle arch and she manually rotated it.
The moment she did this, a small light began to form in the center of the arch and one could vaguely sense the element of space gathering. Marty then took a tiny piece of scrap nearby and tossed it at the center of the arch and it vanished. Half a second later the same piece of scrap was spit back out and was covered in scorch marks.
*Tchzzzt Boom*
Several pops echoed out from the arch where it had obvious signs of damage and the entire thing powered down. Kazuki thought Marty would be disappointed with this result but instead, she was smiling from ear to ear.
