【3rd person’s POV】

Regina, looking at the fight unfolding between Sam and Balgaar from the side, was in utter chaos. The battle was just on another level: she could never interfere in such a fight. She could somehow match Balgaar’s might by using her magic, but she had no answer for his overwhelming physical prowess.

What she was most surprised by was that Balgaar had grown stronger than ever before, and Sam was able to match his power. The Hero was clearly much stronger than she’d believed. But what truly terrified her was the weapon Sam was using. That weapon reeked of death, and she could feel a dark energy from it which drove dread deep into her soul.

Just then, she noticed a stray fireball coming at her, and swiftly constructed multiple magic barriers to defend herself. Even then, she couldn’t escape unscathed. Those fireballs capable of destroying any defense, Regina wasn’t sure how Sam was taking them with his bare body and still surviving. In fact, she wasn’t certain how this place was holding on after such a large scale battle.

She could feel mana imbuing the walls and ceilings, but it clearly did not belong to Balgaar, who never employed mana.

Sam and Balgaar’s battle was reaching the climax. Regina felt the urge to run away the moment she saw Tzeeneth hungrily swallow Balgaar’s right arm, and for the first time she felt respect for him because he was unfazed even after having his arm devoured by such a perverse weapon.

And then she saw it. She saw how Sam was defeated. The tables had been turned in just a single moment- Sam’s move of throwing his weapon was clearly foolish. His torso had been cleaved in half, and he had been sent flying by a powerful kick.

The battle had ended early, she thought. When they fought him during the Age of Extinction, various small countries, mountains, large forests etcetera were wiped off the face of the map. Considering that, this battle was concluded with minimal losses.

So this is it, huh. Regina sighed as she saw Sam’s face being cut in half. She felt a bit rueful and greatly disappointed over his death, but she didn’t possess the necessary capabilities required to bring him back.

Well, this was how it was supposed to end. Going against Balgaar alone was the height of arrogance and foolishness. She concluded.

Balgaar turned around and started walking, his armour and broken sword slowly dissipating into the air. So, she got ready to announce the winner.

“Well the, the winner of this match is-”

“Where are you going, O Lord of Fire? You haven’t buried me yet.”

But before she could, a ghastly dead whisper entered her ears, sending chills down her spine and terrifying the absolute shit out of her.

“H-How can this be?!”

Unable to hold herself anymore, she shouted in disbelief.

And why wouldn’t she? After all, a spear was protruding from the chest of Balgaar.

With eyes wide with disbelief, he slowly turned his head to look behind him, only to see a perfectly fine Sam standing there, tightly gripping the shaft of the spear that had penetrated his heart.

“Warum……. Immer et můžete vivit noch?”
<Why……. are you still alive?>

He managed to ask as he tried to seize and remove Tzeeneth from his chest, but he couldn’t move his hand. And then, he felt and saw it. A dense black liquid was covering his arms and legs. That black mass was binding them thus stopping him from moving. And finally he saw that the Shadow Wings adorning Sam’s back were no longer there.

Sam pulled the spear from Balgaar’s chest and thrust it again, accurately piercing his heart. He then took it out and thrust it again. Employing his full speed, he did it countless times in just the blink of an eye.

Balgaar’s chest, now a mess due to being stabbed many times, resembled minced meat. But Sam knew this was not enough to kill him, so gave his last order to Tzeeneth.

Receiving its order, it merged with the black mass binding Balgaar and invaded his body through the various holes made by stabbing, and started destroying and eating it.

Beginning with his heart, the black mass symbolising death was moving around inside his body and killing him.

Finished with his work, Sam gently smiled and answered Balgaar’s question from before.

“You haven’t forgotten, have you? I am the Ruler of Death.”

“Aber quam- kheok!”
<But how- kheok!>

He coughed out blood.

“Wie non vie noch potest to utor?”
<How can you still use it?>

“I just had some countermeasures in place.”

Sam informed him.

Unable to stand anymore, perhaps due to Tzeeneth devouring him or the feeling of loss he was experiencing just now, Balgaar started falling down. However, Sam caught him and gently put him on the ground.

“Ich habe, videre I.”
<I see, I lost.>

Balgaar murmured regretfully.

“Ich indicavit ty, habe mihi? To dich cum jde nicht venerit s zu mir.”
<I told you, didn’t I? That you were going to come with me.>

“Du nemocný bastardis…….. Ich anathemate vás zum damnentur v ewigen!”
<You sick bastard…….. I curse you to suffer in eternal damnation!>

Balgaar managed to spat out his final curse before dying, to which, Sam just coldly replied.

“Ich iam chcete. Gut tum já preis collectis vyhrávám dies aciem.”
<I already am. Well then, I’ll be collecting my prize for winning this battle.>

“Hmph, quid cokoliv sie vis? Jen machen certe si löschen mea uvedomujete.”
<Hmph, do whatever you want! Just make sure you extinguish my consciousness.>

Balgaar scoffed, but Sam once again replied in a cold, flat tone.

“Barmherzigkeit faciam není gibt ergo vhodné es. Videritis, nwo mit, non I morietur.”
<Mercy does not exist. I’ll be using you as I see fit. So, die now.>

On his last breaths, the prideful Balgaar lost all will to live after losing the battle and patiently waited for the sweet embrace of death. As his eyes continued to grow heavy and he lost all feeling in his body, he took one final look at his killer’s face.

That cold, apathetic face, with eyes resembling the abyss. The Sam of the past with his sinister countenance yet bright and cheerful eyes, had forever been painted black by those who had wronged him. As he began to lose his consciousness, he felt a bit regretful for not being able to fulfil his duty properly.

And so, he continued to gaze into Sam’s eyes. Those black eyes, containing an abyss darker than true black, were examining him. He could see storms of madness raging inside that abyss. Yet, as he prepared to close his eyes forever, he saw another emotion at the bottom of that abyss.

For just the briefest of moments, Sam’s expression twisted into something Balgaar hadn’t thought him capable of making.

And that’s when the truth dawned on him. The façade he had stripped away was but just one layer. The truth he had believed had always been lying to him.

That’s why, in the Balgaar who had given up on life, a new flame lit up. That flame, which burned brighter than ever before, told Balgaar what he must do.

“I see, you truly are a magnificent liar……..”

He murmured, and then closed his eyes, accepting his death because he knew that he would get another chance to serve his King.

And just before his consciousness faded into oblivion, he heard Sam’s last farewell.

“Until we see each other again, old friend.”
