Return of the Fallen Volume 13 Chapter 59

Verick took Runa away, and the newly repaired black doors slammed shut behind him. Mefius turned to Kazuki and was about to say something when the repairs to the room finished and the small green creature bowed.

“Master, I have finished.”

Mefius looked over at the repaired room and approached a wall. Sliding his hand across the surface he nodded in satisfaction.

“Editirx, once again your craftsmanship is impeccable. If only the rest of your race was as useful as you are. Maybe then I wouldn’t have eliminated them all.”

The small green creature called Editirix shook and his ears twitched in fear and sadness.

“Thank you…Master. Will there be anything else?”

Mefius smiled fiendishly before he pat Editrix on his head as if he were a small dog.

“Nothing more. Leave us.”

Editrix said nothing else but one could see the darkness in his eye. Kazuki could sense all the emotions inside Editrix’s soul. Fear, anger, acceptance, disgust. In the end, Editrix could do nothing else but follow Mefius’s command and he too left. Just as the door was closing, he and Kazuki made eye contact and in this moment Kauzki could sense Editrix felt pity for him.

(Another victim of the monster. Poor man.)

This was the feeling Editrix’s soul was emanating.

After he left, it was now just Kazuki and Mefius.

Mefius walked over with his left hand behind his back as if to seem noble-like. He looked down at Kazuki with a smirk.

“Did you like that little display of power? How many do you know can speak a few words and make their opponent falter before them?”

Kazuki did not know if Mefius was being serious or not and did not know how to respond. He knew this man was quick to rage and could kill him with a snap of his finger so he did not wish to piss him off with something stupid. All he could do is try to appease him.

“I…I do not know any that are so great.”

Mefius’s look changed and he placed a hand on Kauzki’s shoulder. It was this same hand that contained the golden black flame, the very same power that caused Kazuki to question how someone could be so powerful. Kazuki had witnessed the one true begins power from Arc and Belux’s memories. When Arc was the one true supreme being, he could overturn the universe with a thought. Mefius did not match such power but to this day, Mefius was the second strongest being he had ever come across.

“You don’t know any so great…Now you do. Tell me human, how did you enter my Realm, where is the exit!?”

Kazuki had no clue. In the final moment, there was a massive explosion in Chaotic space. Kazuki thought they were going to win when Belux made a final move. After that, everything had gone blank, and the next thing he knew he awoke in this land of heat and death.

“I…I do not know. I

*CRACK*

Before Kazuki could finish what he was saying, Mefius squeezed his shoulder and broke it instantly. Kazuki had long cut off his pain receptors so this break did not hurt but there was no way he would mention that.

Kazuki pretended to feel pain and contorted his face in pain. He purposely sped up his heartbeat and drained the blood from his face causing his complexion to pale. he fell over and gripped his shoulder whilst crying out in a mix of groans and screams.

*AHHHHHHHH UHHH*

Mefius relished in Kazuki’s fake agony.

“Don’t lie to me again Kazuki or I will keep breaking things and when I am done breaking things, I will begin to remove things, things that you will surely miss. I’ve witnessed your recovery speed, truly glorious but that just means I can torture you to my heart’s content and you won’t taste death. Over and over and over again you will be broken. Now tell me, lest I grow angry.”

Kazuki could have sworn he was already angry but since his soul was too strong he could not read it.

Kazuki knew he was serious. Again, pain to the body he could take all day every day but he needed to leave this place as quickly as possible. Playing into his enemy’s hands on the surface while plotting under the veil was just his style and would be his way out of there.

Kazuki’s entire body shook and he made his eyes undilated.

“I swear, I don’t know how I arrived here!”

Although this was the truth, Kazuki hoped that Mefius would take him at this and would not try and look into his soul. He was still unsure if his theory was correct about these Gerians and their ability to manipulate the soul and he did not wish to be the test subject to find out.

Mefius grabbed Kauzki by his lower jaw and lifted him off the ground until they were at eye level. He stared into the depths of Kazuki’s eyes as if he were searching for something.

“This is your last chance. If you’re lying I will find out.”

Kazuki’s feet dangled in the air as if he were a child.

“I…I swear. I do not know how I came to be in this Realm.”

“Have it your way human.”

Mefius’s eyes glowed bright red and the collar around Kauzki’s neck responded with its own red glow.

“Soon I shall know all of it anyway. Let us hope you were telling the truth, otherwise…”

Kazuki suddenly felt the crimson lightning from the slave collar enter his soul world. He wished to prevent it but the collar was suppressing him almost entirely. Kazuki kept half of his focus on the outside world while the rest followed the collar’s lightning into his soul world.

As soon as he entered his soul world time seemed to slow and so to did the red lightning. It was aiming directly for his soul tree but it had frozen in place or rather moved so slowly that it was as if it were frozen. Kazuki already knew exactly what the purpose of this lightning was but he would not be caught.

He immediately went to work. In previous times Kazuki had made fake identities using the many memories and experiences of the lives of others. He had seen trillions upon trillions of different souls and absorbed all of their memories. With his soul-reading ability, he quickly made a fake identity also called Kazuki. He created a fake soul. By taking a part of his aura he filled it with these new and manipulated memories creating a whole new life from scratch. He then took this part of his aura and coated his entire soul tree with it before severing it from the rest of his aura so as to have no connection to his real soul.

In this way, if anyone looked over his soul they would only see the fake soul covering his soul tree. Everything from birth to where he was now. All of it was faked. The only problem was if the probe dove further and actually entered his soul tree. If this were to happen, he would instantly be discovered as his true soul would be uncovered and seen through.

Kazuki was betting it all on Mefius not being able to use aura at a masterful level.

With this, he left his soul world and returned to the outside world.

He could feel the crimson lightning rushing across the surface of his soul. He could sense the memories of his fake life being looked over. Half a moment later, the red lightning left his soul and entered Mefius’s forehead. Mefius closed his eyes and blinked once as he took in all of this fake information.

With a smirk, he tossed Kazuki to the ground.

“So that was your life…How pathetic. All your life you’ve been nothing but a farmer and after losing everything you encountered a teacher who taught you alchemy. Just when your life was about to become something worth living for, you were betrayed and fell into a pit. To think that pit would actually somehow connect you to my Realm. It’s a shame your memories are fuzzy and you don’t know the location.”

Mefius seemed to be really disappointed for some reason.

“Hmm, even the secret to your regeneration can’t be applied here. Those ingredients you used for your alchemy experiments, none of them exist in my Realm. Otherwise, I would make use of those potions and skills and gain that fast recovery ability of yours. Still, there may be some use for you yet.”

Kazuki had made an identity that revolved around a pitiful farmer that learned alchemy. His life was boring and shit but also led him to accidentally entering this Realm. His fast recovery was explained away by his experiments and so too was his extraordinary strength. All of this though could not be utilized because Kazuki made up ingredients that don’t exist.

(Thankfully, I was correct, he can not see my true memories. I’m glad I did not give too many details to Monsuta just in case. Now I have a starting point.)
