【Sam’s POV】
“The only one who can bring her back, is The Ancient Dragon Shiggurath.” (Brother)
I was about to get out of here after hearing the name of Shiggurath, but Cornellia moved first and held my shoulder so I lost the timing to do so.
I’m getting a really bad feeling.
“Give me more details!” (Cornellia)
“Ok ok, but please let me down first….” (Brother)
Cornellia let her brother go, and then turned towards me.
“Sam, no, Mr. Hayden. Would you please stay here? Depending on the situation, I might need your help.” (Cornellia)
Yepp, this was what I feared. Time to make excuses.
“Have you gone mad, Ms. Cornellia El Lucent? We are talking the most powerful being to ever exist in this world, The Ancient Dragon Shiggurath. Me being there would make absolutely no difference. Moreover, I know for a fact that whatever you’re trying to do would come with a hefty price. And I sure don’t want to be on the side that has to pay that price.” (Sam)
Let’s hope that this convinces her.
“You’re wrong there, human. Shiggurath is overwhelmingly strong, yes. But he also possesses intelligence. Since what we want him to do is quite easy for him, we just need to convince him to do it for us.” (Brother)
The brother interfered.
Can you just shut the fuck up for a minute, you siscon! Can’t you see that I’m making excuses here?!
And why is he helping his sister now? Didn’t he want to kill me so I could leave her alone?
But, did he just say that bringing someone back to life is easy for Shiggurath? Just what kind of monster is he? Only a selected number of people are allowed to do that, ya know. And a mere mortal shouldn’t be one of them.
Cornellia once again looked towards me, but this time with puppy eyes.
“See, Mr. Hayden? Doing this won’t be dangerous. Won’t you help us?” (Cornellia)
If she thinks that those puppy eyes would work on me then she’s absolutely correct. But I won’t lose so easily!
“Even if you say that, I have nothing to gain here, do I? So, bye bye.” (Sam)
I turned around as I said that and was about to make a run for it but….
“What if I teach you the healing magic I just showed?” (Cornellia)
And there we have a prime example of how a single statement can change everything. Like, wait, that’s illegal. Now this is an offer than I can never refuse. If the basic principle of this healing magic is the same as what I think, then I just might be able to master Decomposition. I might also be able to further develop Demolition, and that mass-energy conversion magic. And if I were to master all of them along with Cornellia’s healing magic, then I just might be able to win the upcoming war single-handedly. Good grief……
Ah.. what should I do? Should I accept her offer? Although the merits of accepting are many, that doesn’t undermine the demerits. Hmmm……
Well, progress takes sacrifice after all.
“This is so unfair…… Fine. But I won’t hesitate to run away if my life gets endangered.” (Sam)
Well, I would also like to meet the existence that can resurrect someone.
“Thanks a lot Sam!” (Cornellia)
She squealed happily.
Weren’t you addressing me as Mr. Hayden? Where is that respect that you were showing me just before? And so we looked towards the brother who gave us that information.
“And so, how will Shiggurath bring back this Alice, whatever this bringing back means. And how can we convince him to do it? And where will we even find him? And before that, why do you even know about it?” (Sam)
“Calm down, human. Firs-” (Brother)
“His name is Samuel Hayden, brother. You will properly call him Mr. Hayden, and you will treat him with respect. Is that clear?” (Cornellia)
Cornellia ordered her brother.
“O-Ok…” (Brother)
The brother sure has gotten very docile after being punched by her sister. This is good, right?
“As I was saying, this happened when I was looking through the ancient records of the Elven Empire. Among them, I found a document about the 2nd elf king. According to it, that king had a wife, but that wife got ill and went into a coma. The doctors of that time did everything they could, but they still couldn’t cure the sickness of the queen. And so that king set out on a journey to find a cure for his wife’s illness, and at the end of that journey he met Shiggurath. Shiggurath, impressed with the king’s immense love for his wife, cured her.” (Brother)
“…….. Are you sure that this isn’t just a folk tale?” (Sam)
I mean, it does sound like one.
“No. I have verified that this is the truth.” (Brother)
“How?” (Sam)
“By asking the 2nd king himself.” (Brother)
Yeah, I forgot about that but elves live very long lives. And I also remember reading about an ancient elf king that’s still alive.
“And where will we find this Shiggurath?” (Sam)
That’s the most important question here.
“About that, we’re in luck because Shiggurath is currently residing in the mountains behind the royal castle of the Elven Empire.” (Brother)
“Really?! Then let’s go there right now!” (Cornellia)
“Whoa, hold your horses there. You do know how far your empire is, right?” (Sam)
“Don’t worry about that. My brother here knows teleportation magic. We can go there right now.” (Cornellia)
Damn. Looks like I have no choice but to go there right now. I would have liked to prepare some things before going but… Fuck it. Let’s see what’ll happen.
And so we decided to go to The Elven Empire right away. The brother prepared the magic formation for teleportation. This is the problem with large scale teleportation: it requires a lot of preparation.
After about half an hour, the preparations were completed and we transported to the inner chambers of the royal castle.
Teleportation basically works in a way where our entire body is dismantled and transported through time-space and then reassembled at the place we get teleported to. This makes it very dangerous, as even a little mistake in the reassembling process could kill you. Another demerit is that you can only teleport to places you’ve already been to. That’s why I am also working on creating an enhanced version of teleportation. It will still take some time to complete it though.
Just like the time I was summoned in this world, light filled my vision, and when it vanished, I found that the place we got teleported to was a very large balcony.
Two moons shone upon me in the dark of the night. Looking out from the balcony, I could see a large city. Even though it was night, the streets were filled with light and the hustle and bustle of the large cities.
Assuming that this is the royal castle, this city should be the royal capital. I looked around, but couldn’t see anything clearly because it was night outside.
Yeah, I forgot but the Elven Empire and the Holy Kingdom are in different halves of this world. That’s how large their territories are. That’s why it’s night here even though it was morning when we were near Gundia.
We walked into the room connecting to the balcony and found soldiers already waiting inside.
Maybe this room is the standard teleporting point?
The person who looked like the leader of the soldiers inside the room approached us, genuflected and spoke.
“Welcome back, Prince Charles and Princess Cornellia. The king and queen have been waiting for you. You should go meet them right now.” (Leader)
The soldiers around him also kneeled on the spot.
“Rise, Karzark. Tell mother and father that I won’t be meeting them as I don’t have the time to do that. But I will be visiting Alice right now.” (Cornellia)
Huh? Did I just hear her say that she would meet Alice? So…….. this Alice is actually still alive? Then what did they mean by bringing her back?
Just as I was about to get lost in my reveries, Cornellia called out to me.
“Let’s go, Sam. Brother, you go meet mother and father in my stead.” (Cornellia)
“Ok.” (Sam and Charles)
Cornellia headed out of the room. I started going after her in a hurry but Karzark gripped my shoulder to stop me.
What, is he going to pick a fight with me? Is he also going to accuse me of seducing her cute little princess and forcing her to abandon her country?
“Thank you for taking care of the princess, masked man. It’s been a long time since I saw her being genuinely happy. Please continue taking care of her.” (Karzark)
He thanked me with a tone full of respect.
Though I don’t think that I’m in any way responsible for her happiness. Most probably, her happiness comes from being able to find a way to cure her Alice.
After saying that he slightly bowed and left. The soldiers also bowed to me, as if requesting me the same thing Karzark did. Looks like there are still some decent elves left.
After bowing to them in return, I hurried after Cornellia.
