【Liera’s POV】

I was currently walking in the corridors of the castle, going to meet a certain person in his room. The meeting with Alicia and the others had ended last night. Since the situation was getting out of control, it was decided that we would consult this person to plan our next move.

I soon reached his room, and knocked twice on the door.

「Come in.」

An elderly voice resounded in my ears. He had used magic to grant me permission to enter. I opened the door and entered the room. The inside was normal, and an old man was sitting on the sofa meant for visitors.

“Ah Liera. Come have a seat.”

“Before that, do something about your looks. It’s unnerving to see you like this.” (Liera)

“Hahahaha, I see.”

He chuckled and then undid the transformation magic he had cast on himself, and what came out was a handsome young man. This man, is the fourth member of the first Hero party. He was the brains of our party, and also our hidden trump card. Very few people know about his existence. I personally never liked him though.

He motioned me to sit in front of him. I complied.

“So, what do you want from this old man?”

“Old man? Well technically, you are old. However, you don’t need to keep up these pretences. You know exactly what I’m here for, right?” (Liera)

“I won’t deny that statement.”

This guy’s as shrewd as ever, huh. There’s no way in hell that someone as cautious as him wouldn’t know our situation. I’m sure that he has been making his moves behind the scenes, just in case things got out of hand.

That’s what he’s been doing things since the past 5000 years. Whenever the Demon King appeared and the Hero was summoned, this man acted in the shadows doing the dirty work in order to prepare a stage where victory was certain. That’s how we’ve won the past four wars between mankind and demons. Only the first war was different.

The first Demon King Regina, was a living extinction level event. She had even fought Shiggurath at his full power, and had managed to live to tell the tale of it. A feat that us four, the remaining members of the first Hero party, are still not capable of achieving. Even the Commandments that served her were capable of wiping out countries on their own.

Many sacrifices had been made just to defeat her. The world’s population had dwindled by half at the end of that war. However, the Demon Kings that followed Regina were very weak when compared to her. They were still stronger than us, yes, but not much. It was still possible to defeat them through the use of tactics and numbers, something that never worked on the first Demon King.

The problem was the Demon Army. Even the lowest levelled demons are ten times stronger than a normal soldier of the army. That’s why the Hero was summoned to fight the Demon King, while we handled the Demon Army and the commandments. Even then, the newly summoned Hero were never strong enough to defeat the Demon King.

That’s where this man came in. No one knows how he does it, but he manages to significantly weaken the Demon King, at least enough so that the Hero could defeat her.

He never told us how he did though. That’s why I neither like nor trust him.

But the situation this time is different. Different from the past Heroes who only wanted to satisfy their own petty senses of justice, or some other convoluted desires, Sam and Jack are intelligent humans who know how to look at the complete picture objectively. Moreover, they are strong, and know exactly how to use their power for the best possible results.

Jack is something of a monster. However, I feel that Sam is more fearsome. I can’t help but think that if we try to manipulate him, we would end up being manipulated ourselves.

Technically speaking, this is good since they are on our side. But here’s the problem: unlike the past cases, the current Heroes don’t completely trust us. They were hiding their true powers, probably to make us underestimate them, which would have been beneficial for them in case we ever betrayed them.

Well played, Samuel.

Now since they don’t completely trust us, it’s not impossible for them to one day betray us. In the worst-case scenario, they might even join the Demon King. And if that happens…… only Phiria would know what would happen.

And although the possibility of that happening is low, it’s still not zero. That’s why I have come here to meet this man. Let’s see what he has to say.

“So? What do you suggest we do?” (Liera)

“Before that, please tell me everything that you know about the current situation.”

“Why-, no, fine.” (Liera)

And I told him everything about what happened during the invasion and what we discussed in that meeting.

After listening to me and contemplating for some time, he finally spoke.

“The dragon, Drache, was it? She has formed a contract with Sam and is willing to accompany him in his human form. I don’t remember there being a dragon like that. Is it a new born? What matters is that she deemed Sam worthy to be her partner, which is quite problematic. A dragon never forms a contract with someone who is weaker than it. So Sam is at least stronger than a dragon. Hmm…….. Liera, you are to accompany the Heroes and their partners, especially the dragon, at all times. Never let them leave your sight.”

“Understood.” (Liera)

“Also, the new dungeon that was recently discovered in the outskirts of Blatan. I have received a report that the Demon King would be going there. So I want you to take the current Heroes there, fight alongside them to defeat the Demon King, and then bury the Heroes there. This should be possible for you, no?”

Eh? He wants to kill them right away? He has never wanted that before.

“Putting aside whether I can pull this off or not, do we really need to kill the Heroes? I mean, there might be steps that we can take in order to ensure that the Heroes don’t betray us.” (Liera)

He smiled, and spoke in a gentle yet admonishing tone.

“Liera. I fully understand your concerns. But we cannot take risks. The Heroes are a major power, but so volatile and wilful. Fractious, in fact. We have no use for a power we cannot control. It must be eliminated: soon. If the current Heroes were to join hands with the Demon King, then we’ll lose. And us losing would mean the annihilation of mankind. That’s why we need to kill the Demon King right now, and along with her, the Heroes. You don’t want that, do you?”

But-

Haahh… Fine. He does have a point.

“Understood. I’ll do as you say.” (Liera)

“Good. Now let’s save the species, shall we.”

It’s regrettable Jack, but looks like I won’t be able to fight you fairly. Well, never mind.

We then further discussed the finer details of our plan in order to not make any mistakes at the crucial moment.

Ah, a plan to kill both the Hero party and Demon party, huh. Kukukukuku, he’s going to love this. Though I’m sure that he would have already predicted this.

I decided to leave as there was nothing more to be gained here. I just need to report this to him, and he’ll know what to do with these mongrels. I’m sure that he would once again make plans to make them dance on the palm of his hands.

So that I enjoy this the most….

Dance with your all, O pitiful children.

Now then, let’s begin the march of the moving dolls.
