【Sam’s POV】
And so, Balgaar finally died. The last remaining Lord of Hell, one of the six pillars in charge of Hell, had fallen to me, just like those before him. Seeing the mighty Balgaar lying before me seemed a bit sad, but this was a choice that I made.
His corpse, devoid of any life, turned into blood red mist and was absorbed by me. On the other hand, Tzeeneth also turned into black smoke and lingered there for a while, as if saying his farewell, and then vanished into thin air.
With this, I have used two of my three trump cards: Tzeeneth and one of the two abilities of my title.
⟦You got lucky, lad. I wouldn’t have been able to help you if the ritual had not ended with your death.⟧
Maxwell informed me.
⟦Isn’t that why I died?⟧
This whole thing had been arranged the moment I knew that Balgaar was here. My death was a necessary part of it.
⟦But remember. There’ll be no resurrections next time.⟧
⟦Yeah, I know.⟧
I know it better than anyone else.
“You….. actually defeated him.”
As I was contemplating the events that happened so far, Regina came to my side and muttered in a daze.
Well, I can understand where she is coming from. Even I would have been surprised if someone had killed Balgaar in front of me.
But the sole reason I could win this time was because I had Tzeeneth. Without it, I would have died a long time ago.
“You thought I wouldn’t be able to? Preposterous! I would appreciate if you had some more faith in your partner.”
“Partner? What a joke.”
Ouch. Why are people hurting my feelings nowadays?
“Never mind. Anyway, since we have achieved our primary goal of surviving, I think we should get out of here.”
“What about the wraiths then?”
She asked.
“What about them? I believe they’ll go back to being the loners they were. However, I hope you’ll keep the news about their survival a secret. I want to let them live in peace.”
Moreover, I wouldn’t want humanity’s resources to be divided just because a bunch of idiots were jealous of their prosperity. Fucking humans.
“Fine. I don’t want another Balgaar to come to this world anyway.”
No, I don’t think that would happen-
……………
I need to have a serious talk with Phiria. So much work……
“Anyway, I don’t think that these series of events have brought us close enough to make us forget our enmity and have a nice tea party, have they?”
“Are you an idiot? Of course, they haven’t. Moreover, I don’t even like tea.”
What?
“You don’t like tea? What kind of monster are you?”
“I am the Demon King. And the next time we meet, it will be on the battlefield.”
“You are saying that even after witnessing my power?”
Just how incorrigible can she get?
“I clearly felt your weapon fading into oblivion. You won’t be able to use it anymore.”
What?! She felt it?
Ah well, doesn’t matter.
“Fine.”
If she wants to die so much, who am I to stop her?
“Well then-”
As I was about to say my farewell, a sound resembling stones rubbing against each other reverberated inside the room. The source of the sound was Balgaar’s throne.
The throne had been split from the middle, and they were sliding apart to create space in the middle of it. After the two parts of the throne stopped moving, a circular altar started rising from the underground in the space created. After it stopped, two objects appeared on it.
They seemed cylindrical in shape, and one of them was black while the other was golden.
“Seems like this is our reward for clearing the dungeon.”
“Seems like it.”
We looked at each other for a while. A fierce will to claim those rewards could be clearly seen in her eyes.
“Godspeed.”
“Ultraspeed.”
We simultaneously broke into a run to procure those items, and we simultaneously reached the altar. I took the golden one, while she took the black one.
“Hey! Why are you taking it?! I was the one who defeated Balgaar!”
This is outright outrageous!
“Haaah? Without me, you wouldn’t even have reached this place. And I also judged your match with Blagaar! This is my payment for all of that!”
“How evil! Your life was your reward for judging our match! Give it back to me!”
“I am the Demon King. I am supposed to be evil! Mwahahaha!”
She laughed maniacally.
“You! At least exchange my golden one with your black one!”
I like the black one more!
“Why would I even do that? Black suits my personality.”
“You are a king, aren’t you? You should go with shiny ostentatious things.”
“Fuck off.”
She cursed and stuck out her tongue to ridicule me.
This fucker!
I wanted to trade with her, but the ground started shaking violently, enough that it became difficult for us to stand.
“What is happening?!”
“I don’t know!”
Suddenly, a large rock fell on the altar from above and smashed it to smithereens.
“Don’t tell me…. The dungeon is falling?!”
“What the fuck?!”
Why is it falling apart now?! What about the others?!
「Jack! The dungeon is falling apart! Get everyone out of this place!」
I hurriedly sent a message to Jack.
「We are already out. You are the only one who’s left.」
「What? That’s good.」
Now, how should I get out of here?
Regina tapped on my shoulder and pointed on our left.
“There! That door opened just now! Maybe that’s the exit?”
“We’ll know only after going through it. For now, run!”
We broke into a run towards the door in the wall while taking care not to get crushed under the debris falling from above. When we exited the throne room from that door, we entered a hallway that was leading up. Having no other choice, we started to run through it.
Behind us, the ceiling also started collapsing, raising clouds of dust swallowing everything behind us. Now, it was a race between us and the falling ceiling.
“If you want to live then run with all your might, Samuel!”
“That’s what I am doing right now god damnit!”
After dashing for what seemed like an eternity, we finally saw light. Putting our last efforts, we ran even faster and got out through that opening.
We flew for a moment, but soon fell to the ground.
“Ouch ouch!”
I uttered painfully as I fell on my butt. Regina had also fallen in the same way on my left.
“That was one hell of a ride. I’m never going into dungeons again.”
“No shit.”
She muttered.
We laid on the grass for a while, huffing due to running for such a long time.
The soft grass felt ticklish on my neck, and the gentle breeze that blew from time to time helped me regain control of my breathing.
I looked to my side to see how Regina was doing, but strangely enough, she was not there. I looked around a bit, but I couldn’t see her anywhere.
“Hmm. So, she left me alone, huh. Fine. I’ll see her on the battlefield in a few days.”
After resting for some more, I stood up. It was time to go back to others.
In front of me was the mountain under which the dungeon was located. Apparently, I was at the grasslands behind that mountain. So, if I cross it, I should reach the forest from before, and from there, I’ll reach Blatan.
And behind me, I could make out a large castle in the distance. The castle seemed to be black in colour, with a city constructed around it. The most remarkable thing about that place was that even though it was noon right now, dark clouds loomed over that place.
That place was where demons resided. In other words, the place I am at right now would be where the final battle would be fought.
As I was ruminating over the battle, I suddenly received a message. The sender was Shiggurath. I allowed the connection, and suddenly a scream filled my ears.
「Sam! Where are you right now?! I heard the dungeon collapsed?! Are you all right?!」
So loud!
「Whoa, calm down for a minute, Shiggurath. I am perfectly fine. I’m just at the plains behind the mountain from before.」
「Phew. Understood. I’m coming to retrieve you right now. Stay where you are.」
She sighed in relief.
「Got it. I’ll wait for you here.」
I cut the connection after saying that.
Now then, what should I do till then? Let’s check the reward.
I took out the cylindrical object from before. It shone radiantly in the sunlight. It was a simple cylinder, with some intricate carvings and precious stones on it. I started fiddling with it to see what exactly it was, when suddenly the upper part of the cylinder popped open like a lid. What revealed beneath was a red stone, which seemed like a button that was inviting me to press it.
“Hmmm…… wait….”
When I examined the carvings more closely, I could make out letters. Letters that I recognised. And then there was the mana emanating from this ‘switch’. This was a mana that I recognised. It was nostalgic, in fact.
“I see. Well played, Phiria. Well played.”
I guess I’ll apologise to her later for badmouthing her for being lazy and not doing her work properly, when all the while she was planning moves like this.
With this, I have gained everything I needed.
The game has proceeded to the next stage, and my victory is now certain.
