Chapter 231 Part 2

Alright, for now, let’s call Volff and Zangetsu back and summon Heather.
Since she’s a fairy, she’ll be able to fly together with me and the others.
Next, let’s check the description of the spell again to make sure that I didn’t miss anything.

The effect of the Flight spell lasts for 230 seconds and the maximum flight speed is 134 km/h.
Hm? 134 km/h?
Did the maximum flight speed increased a little since the last time I checked the description of this spell?
Well, that certainly works out in my favor.
Since I’m going to test the Fly spell now, all the members of my monster team were the ones who could fly as well.
Haaa… it’s such a shame that Obsidian cannot join us in this endeavor.

Now then.
I selected Fly from my spell list and executed it.
I wonder what is going to happen to me, exactly?

Immediately my body has been enveloped by a floaty sensation.
My body has been slowly lifted from the ground and ascended into the sky.
I wonder if this first flight is going to be a tutorial one?

Getting the hang of the flight controls was somewhat complicated, but eventually I managed to fully grasp them.
Accelerating and decelerating was all done with the movement of the feet.
When you held them close to one another you gained speed, and when you widened them apart you slowed down.
The direction of the flight was decided by the way you twisted your body.
A little tricky, but once you get used to it, it becomes second nature.
Also, assigning the flight controls to the legs is pretty convenient for me, since it makes it possible to still wield a weapon in each of my hands.
Of course, using spells will be no problem as well.
How is my current party handling this?
Helix and Cotouly are keeping with me without any problems, but Heather and Gengetsu were lagging behind until they attached themselves to the other two.
Maybe I should slow down a little?

Even with Flight working, it was still possible for me to cast other strengthening spells on me.
With such a mechanic, would it be possible for me to participate in aerial battles from now on?
I mean the MP reduction from the continuous usage of Flight is not as big as I expected, so the next time we happen upon a monster I might as well give it a shot.

Just as I was thinking about it, the opportunity rammed itself into me literally seconds later.
Helix notified me that he’s spotted a monster!
Looks like we’ll be battling in the skies after all!

The thing is…
The Flight spell only lasts for 280 seconds: 5 minutes.
I have been flying around for a minute or two, so I’m on the clock here.
What to do now? What to do?
Should I take the monster on and risk plummeting to the ground from such a height?
Or just leave it be and land safely on the ground?

Ah, fuck it, let’s do this thing!
I’d have to do it eventually, and the sooner I get used to the aerial battles, the better!

Our prey has entered my line of sight!
It was an Incubus.
And since we’re flying above its head, it looks like it has yet to notice us.
What a delightful turn of events!
Okay, now is the time to dive towards it for a sneak attack!

Helix increased his speed and went in front of me, only to disappear in the very next moment!
Did he just do a sudden, almost 90 degrees drop?!
Cotouly followed after him.
Maybe I should lower my altitude as well?
So that is how aerial sneak attacks are performed, huh?
Who would have thought that I’ll be able to learn something from my own monsters?

Helix and Cotouly attacked the Succubus, and I joined the soon after with an attack of my own.
Although it was not an attack per se, since I simply grabbed the Incubus and the twisted my body sharply in order to direct myself towards the ground.
When we were getting so close to it that I could make out the details of individual elements among the grass, I released my grip and yeeted the Incubus forward.
Soon after, the sound of bones being broken.
A very loud, unpleasant sound.
I also couldn’t see Incubus’s HP bar anymore, meaning that it most probably died for sure.

I flew back to the ground to inspect the corpse.
And as expected, it looked more like a bag of crashed potatoes than anything remotely human-shaped.
Apparently Incubuses are as fragile in the air as they are on the ground.
Or maybe it was because we successfully launched a sneak attack towards it?
Be that as it may, if there was an Incubus here, then a Succubus must also be around here somewhere.

Aha! There she is! Right above us, just as unaware as that Incubus from earlier was!
Since Fly recharged after I landed and was ready to be used again, we can launch another sneak attack and continue to do battle her in the air.
I have to admit, I’m liking it more and more.

Of to fight her we go!

《『Forest Invaders』event cleared!》
《2 Bonus Points obtained. Current Bonus Points total: 30!》

An abrupt info like that showed itself out of the blue.
I was totally surprised by it, because for the past couple of minutes I was flying and battling in the air.
Well, whatever.
Now that the Incubus has been dealt with I can check what was that about.

『Keith-san, do you have a moment?』

『I’m in the middle of a hunt now, so I’m afraid that’s a no。I’ll get in touch with you when I’m done, okay?』

『Understood。I’ll be waiting.』

I heard Irina’s whispering voice in my head.
She must have used a telepathy spell to contact me.
But we’ll deal with that later.

Succubus was a lot more mobile then the Incubus, so manuvering around her was much more demanding, but when I got the hang of it, the effect was tremendous, allowing us to corner her and bring her crashing down to the ground, just like her partner a few moments later.

My conclusion?
While the Flight spell is definitely handy, it does not allow for much versatility.
Next I tried casting Fly on Zangetsu to see how turning him into a flying horse will turn out, but that was just a waste of both time and MP due to how inefficient the whole undertaking was, because it did not work at all.
Yes, that’s right, Fly had literally zero effect on Summoned Monsters.
Looks like it can only be used on actual players.

After that was all done, I used the telepathy spell to contact Irina.

『Okay, I’m done hunting now, what’s up?』

『Actually I wanted to ask you something. It looks like the event that was going on in the south has finished and the rest is happening in the north. So, will you come with me? 』

『The question here is: do I really have to? There should be a lot of people from the Assault Group to the north, right?』

『I… I think so, yeah.』

『If that’s the case then even if I go with you, there might not be enough prey for us when we get there, wouldn’t you agree?』

『Oh, now that I think about it, I guess the possibility like that does exist.』

『Where are you now?』

『I’m still in the Grey Forest. It’s in the Area Portal for the S3 map, but I’m sur that you already know that.』

Indeed I do.
But a Grey Forest, hmmmm? Now that is just too convenient of an occasion to pass up.

With that information from Irina, a certain plan began to take shape inside of my head.

『Can you wait there for me for a bit? If you do, I might just be able to go north with you.』

『That’s fine with me. I can wait for you there no problem.』

After ending the telepathic conversation with Irina I cancelled the spell and used Return /home instead.
Hmm…
Persuading Adel to join us will probably be easy.
But on the other hand she has a very good intuition, so she might catch on to my plan.
But if I keep behaving like usual, then I don’t think there will be any problems.
What about Irina though?
I guess I’ll just have to wait and see.

Maybe I should bring some food with me?
Damn, I wish I had something they would consider more attractive.
But unfortunately I don’t so food it is.
Maybe they will show off they new Summoned Monsters to me?
They are growing in power by the day.
By having them around, I think we won’t have any difficulties bringing even Sphinxes and Spinxes down.
Yup.
Joining a Union might actually be kinda fun.
From time to time that is.
